Workout Recap - Week of August 18, 2024
Back up to four training sessions this week. Good, good.
Monday
Muay Thai class
It was a wonky atmosphere in the gym this day due to doing some overdue renovations, so we did wonky offensive padwork to suit. Towards the end, there was even the surprise inclusion of the oft-forgotten non-overhand rear hook. I was ripping that in with satisfying weight behind it. Overall, this was a nice change-of-pace class.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
The ongoing renovation had us a bit pinched for space, so this was just a boxing day (as the kru said, we didn't have room for kicks). The actual drills we did were fairly basic, but as ever, I'm fine with focusing on cleaning up fundamentals since that's stuff I'd be likely to actually use in a fight, instead of fancy shit. In any case, it felt like I was firing my punches with a bit better speed and power than I'm used to, since I was able to go full steam with a relatively-experienced partner compared to most of the people I've been working with lately. I still don't begrudge working with newer people (as long as they're willing to learn), but it was nice to get a measure of where I'm at like that.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
This was supposed to be a stamina-burner, but I was working in a trio with one person who didn't know what they were doing, wasn't humble enough to listen to advice, and didn't seem to want to be there at all anyway, so aside from a couple of rounds that they fortunately skipped (which allowed me to get some useful work in), it mostly felt like a sweaty waste of a class. I wish I understood the etiquette for when I can just hurt someone who's fucking around, because the temptation grows every time I end up working with someone who's there to waste everyone's time (including their own).
Thursday
Muay Thai class
This was a kick-focused class, and I was once again with a newbie who refused to listen to my advice. This person was especially frustrating, because they did seem to respond to advice from others, so it seems like they have a problem with me specifically. Oh well, I guess it was good practice for staying focused through the irritation, but it honestly felt like kind of a wasted day again that I would've spent better hitting a bag instead. I think that's a fair metric for judging whether a class was worthwhile or not.
