Workout Recap - Week of December 31, 2023
Trying to push myself to get back to doing these weekly as intended. I've not been great about keeping up with things lately, so it'd be nice to make some progress in correcting that.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
The first part of this class was basic padwork to knock off the holiday rust. I felt a little slow at times but otherwise good, which was encouraging, since I do worry about falling into bad habits during periods of inconsistent training. Then the second half was head-to-head defense work, which I had some fun with. Especially nice was that we finished up with a few rounds of going back and forth with any level of round kicks, where I felt comfortable handling everything coming my way and even seemed to read some signs that I was stinging my partners despite holding back a bit on my power (as per my usual practice with these kinds of drills). I was glad to get the feel of hitting people again.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
This class was unusually packed, with a number of infrequent faces showing up. I can't recall how things were in the first week after January first last year, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some New Year Resolution stuff at play in this. In any case, the actual class worked on doing strikes involving movement to get off the centerline and/or manage distance; a very useful skill that we do incorporate but don't often spotlight. I enjoyed it, plus some of the drills involved also doing knee or elbow strikes, so I was bound to have a good time anyway.
Thursday
Muay Thai class
This was a full head-to-head defense class, covering some basic blocks and stringing them together. I had a number of nice exchanges with some competitive fighters that helped keep my spirits up in this time of no sparring. Overall, nothing stood out as being particularly remarkable, but it was a solid, good class, and I wouldn't have any complaints if all of them were like this.
