Workout Recap - Week of December 8, 2024

As the end of year nears, participation from others at this gym tends to hit a low point, and this year is not seeming to be any exception to that. I'm still intent on grinding out as much as I can, of course, no matter how much of a nuisance others treat me as being.

Monday

Muay Thai class

This was another classic Monday stamina grinder, working on punching to set up multiple leg attacks. The kru was also complaining about the competitive fighters tending to be bad at front kick defenses, so we worked in a bit of practicing that as well. I felt pretty fine overall about how I was doing, though it was hard to judge with much confidence since I was in a trio with a literal child and a person who talks too much to be believed about anything.

Tuesday

Muay Thai class

This was another stamina class, working on atypical sequence extensions with movement and/or cycling between hands and legs. It was good for practicing awareness of range and making spacing adjustments during offense. Admittedly, my brain was a bit disconnected from reality this day, but it was minor enough to not really throw me off, which is a potential good sign for where my baseline performance is these days.

Wednesday

Muay Thai class

This was a boxing class, opening with some weighted arm exercises and then moving into focusing on maintaining good technique while dealing with arm/shoulder fatigue. It was a fairly light class for me, since I'm notoriously slow to tire and then generally still well-disciplined with my technique even past that point. I don't really understand why so many people seem to struggle with improving their stamina, but I suppose it might come partially from mindset, wherein I don't expect to have set-length rounds with regular breaks and showing fatigue could get me killed in a situation where I need to use my fighting skills, so I train expecting to suppress it.

Thursday

Muay Thai class

This was a rare (but always welcome) knee strike training class. I was partnered with someone significantly taller, so my hip flexors were working hard the whole time to avoid any accidental hits to their groin. Inspired in part by the low attendance, we finished up doing some drills going up and down the length of the gym with various repeated strikes, which is something that's always interesting to me since getting into a groove with it helps stave off fatigue better than the usual start-and-stop, only for it to crash down during the breaks between drills. Anyway, it was fun.
