Workout Recap - Week of January 5, 2025
First week of the new year, and first week back at working on grappling. Fun stuff.
Monday
Muay Thai class / BJJ class
As has been the Monday tradition of late, this was a stamina-burner padwork class to start out the week. Nothing too notable about it, but I was rocking out and cracking leather from start to finish in a satisfying way. As for the BJJ class, I was seemingly the only trainee who had some previous experience, so things were pretty rough and sloppy, but the coach is very good, so we should all have a good time getting better together. I tried to help out when I noticed other people doing things poorly and give technique tips where I could, but I was also clearing off some rust, so I was limited in how much I could do that. Nobody else wanted to do a sparring round with the coach at the end, though, so I got in on that, and while I was clearly the inferior grappler and they were clearly holding back to make it somewhat competitive, there was a moment where I took their back and at least threatened a rear naked choke, so that was nice. All in all, it's good to be back at working on fighting in all ways again.

Muay Thai class
This class worked on some atypical sequences with multiple same-side attacks. It was a good shake-up from more regular stuff to practice practical flows that I'm not as smooth with yet. I needed a couple of reps to get into a groove with some of them, but on the whole, I felt fine about how I handled it all. Fun class.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class / BJJ class
The kru was feeling too sick to work on anything too advanced, so we did more fundamental padwork this day. I had a few moments where I noticed that my attacking shoulder was low while punching, so that's something to focus on cleaning up with my boxing going forward. On the plus side, my front kicks were getting some nice knockback even while I was fatigued, which suggests improvement in the consistency of my hip involvement. The BJJ class was also kept short and simple (both since the kru didn't want to stay too late from feeling unwell and because there was only one other trainee this day), so we mostly just drilled on typical arm and leg triangle chokes. Those are both chokes that I want to get good at, so I was happy with it.

Muay Thai class
The kru was still sick, so this was another day of fundamental review. One of the people there called me out specifically as someone for newbies to pay attention to and ask about technique, which was cool; it's still hard for me to internalize that I've gotten to a decent skill level. That said, the specific newbie they were talking to was someone who had blown off my advice repeatedly in the past, so while they could certainly use help with their technique, I don't have much expectation that they'll take that suggestion seriously. I would still try to help them if asked, but as I've said before, I get frustrated with people who don't want to be taught.
