Workout Recap - Week of July 28, 2024
My usual Saturday morning business was cancelled this past week, so I got to fit in an extra training session. A worthwhile affair, since the gym is closed this Monday, and I may end up skipping training on Thursday (depending on how some other personal plans shape up), so the coming week will be lighter than usual to balance things out.
As an aside, while it was a little disappointing that my kru was tricked initially by the misinformation about Imane Khelif, I am glad that she was willing to listen when I dumped a textual wall of information on her about that situation, and as we talked, it seemed to have been a genuine mistake, so I can't fairly hold it against her. Anyone is capable of being fooled, and very few cis people are aware of how pervasive the general media misinformation is from transphobic sources.
Monday
Muay Thai class
This class had some value to it, I'm sure, but my brain was simply out of it this day, and I felt like shit in general from a combination of poor sleep and having missed taking some pills the previous day, so this was one of my worst training performances ever (adjusted for relative skill level). Granted, not helping matters was the fact that one of the people I was in a trio with had zero interest in listening to advice and so sapped whatever motivation I might have had otherwise when it was my turn to hold the pads. Best to put this one behind me and move on.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
This was a body shot day with belly pads. I had missed these, and as usual, I did revel in my partner's discomfort. In fact, it was actually a much-needed sign of success that I was able to clearly discomfort my partner through the pad, because I had a poor night of sleep again, so still managing that much under the circumstances was nice to reassure me that I could be dangerous even when clearly compromised.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
After what felt like a long streak of working in trios (and even a quartet in there), it was good to return at last to working in a pair for this class. Granted, the other person I was with was bad at holding pads, but they're still a newbie, so that was to be expected. Besides, while I did finally get something resembling adequate sleep the previous night, my stamina was still lacking after whatever had messed me up earlier in the week, so it was good to have an excuse to dial back my intensity some in order to keep them safe.
Thursday
Muay Thai class
This was a boxing class, and it was the first time this week that I felt entirely back to being myself. My stamina held up well, both when I was striking and when I was pushing the pace as padholder hard enough for my partner (an aspiring fighter) to need some extra breaks. They were fun to work with, too, as we both mixed in defense checks, and we were both cracking some leather with our power punches.
Saturday
Muay Thai class
As I was the only loser who actually came in for training this day, it ended up being a solo bagwork session. I decided to spend each round focusing on one or two strikes to really think about dialing in my form and timing without the overhead of also mixing in movement and defense. I started out with lead hooks, then rear hooks, front kicks, knee strikes, and finished up with elbow strikes. All in all, it was nine rounds in total, plus some extra calisthenics to cap things off. Exhausting work, but useful and important work, too.
