Workout Recap - Week of June 23, 2024

Bit late posting the recap this week. I'm choosing to not say anything more about the delay.

Monday

Muay Thai class

This class was quite technically-focused, working on offense-to-defense-to-countering sequences, specifically off of a lead straight>rear straight opener. I partnered up with a competitive fighter who wanted to get back into good shape after some time training inconsistently, so I was unfettered in pushing the pace and the intensity on my turns holding the pads (and I appreciated them pushing me in response as well when we switched). We were both clearly spent by the last couple of drills, but it was a good kind of exhaustion, and it was also nice to have them call me out a couple of times towards the end when my fatigue was interfering with keeping my balance. I'd like to partner with them more often, though I'm always wary of pushing myself onto the competitive fighters and bringing down their training level when they're supposed to be getting prepared for upcoming matches.

Tuesday

Muay Thai class

This was purely boxing day, and as if that wasn't enough to make it more tiring than usual, the kru also had us do a few overlength rounds. Putting those points together, I was quite spent by the end, though again, I think it was a good sort of exhaustion. Plus, despite the fatigue, I felt much cleaner with my double jabs than I had been lately, since I was paying active attention to having good form on them, so that was a nice little bit of progress to notice.

Wednesday

Muay Thai class

This was a head-to-head defense day. It felt like one of the first ones in quite some time where we didn't do any light sparring, so this was a nice opportunity to really focus in on my defensive technique. It felt like I generally did well at matching my partners' intensity, and I got to work with a wide range of skill levels. It was a fun time.

Thursday

Muay Thai class

This was a simple padwork day to do some fundamental review. There was nothing particularly special about the drills, but it was good and productive training. It seems like I need to learn how to moderate my front kick power to not get too much separation when I'm trying to follow it with more attacks, since I seem to be knocking my partners farther back with those lately. I'm not sure if that's technical development, power development, or just people coincidentally being more willing to play along the last few times we've worked on those, but in any case, anything except for that last option seems like a good problem to have.
