Workout Recap - Week of November 17, 2024
Competition week meant no double-classes so that the fighters could focus on their preparation. Alas, but I tried to make the best of the time I had, and I will grind on. At least my prediction from Monday came true.
Monday
Muay Thai class
This was a boxing class, with some knees and elbows added in. My punches felt pretty crisp and crunchy, and my other strikes were their usual selves. Partway through the class, the kru put one of the young fighters into a trio with me and my partner. They tanked the experience by seemingly training to get smashed in the face and whine about it. Oh well, it's not my fault if some shitbag doesn't want to work. Maybe their likely upcoming loss with beat some sense into them.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
The class worked on offense>defense>counter drilling. It was basic but useful stuff, though we did only one drill involving rolling under a hook because the kru said a lot of people were asking to get kneed in the face with how they were doing it (I can believe that, since I'm used to correcting people about not leaning forward while rolling like that from having made that mistake the first time I was learning to do it, too). I had been ready to stay for a second class, but the kru said she had enough people to help with fighter preparation, so I wasn't needed. I was admittedly a little irked in the moment, but once I had a moment to think about it, it was fine; I've voluntarily skipped sparring in the last two weeks before competition events for the same reason before.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
The kru was focusing on fighter preparation, so one of the gym seniors led the class this day. We did a bunch of padwork around an eclectic mix of offensive sequences. It felt unfocused, but it was good for athletic conditioning, if nothing else. And I don't mean that dismissively, because being too tired to fight is an easy way to lose a fight.
Thursday
Muay Thai class
This was a fundamental review day, focusing on clean technique, maintaining passive defense, and distance management. I partnered with a newbie who was weak at padholding, so I had to dial back my power for their safety after having generally been able to rip hard earlier this week, but I was still able to work on those points of emphasis, so it was all good. I did let loose the chains a bit when we finished up with multiple repeated round kicks with both legs, and I crushed the calisthenic finisher with aplomb. No second class again to give the fighters some rest for their competition, so I'm just eager to get back into the grind next week.
