Workout Recap - Week of September 1, 2024

Another week that I had been hopeful to return to Friday sparring, and another week where a Thursday surprise got in the way of that. And yet, I remain ever hopeful.

Monday

Muay Thai class

I went into this expecting a fair chance that I'd just be hitting a bag to my own programming since it was a statutory holiday, but there were actually a fair few people who showed up, so it ended up being a regular class. I partnered with a newbie who was enjoyable to work with; they were actually engaged and trying, they were responsive to advice, and they even asked about things they felt uncertain about, all of which were welcome changes from most of the newbies I'd been partnered with lately. Nothing too notable about this class otherwise, except that it was good to grind it out.

Tuesday

Muay Thai class

This was a knee-focused day. The kru seemed to be in a bad mood from dealing with the competitive fighters, but I was enjoying myself, even despite having a bad coordination day where I seemed to keep having little stumbles in my footwork. I also don't understand why so many people seem to be reluctant to get close and grab the head when clinching. Controlling space and posture is key to keeping yourself safer in that position, otherwise you're making yourself a target for your opponent rather than the other way around.

Wednesday

Muay Thai class

This was a head-to-head defense drill day, starting out with a few rounds of light sparring. My sparring goal was to land a lead hook to the body each round, and I believe I accomplished that, so it was a successful day from that perspective. There were an odd number of people in the class, so when we switched to doing partnered exchange drills, I kept trying to take a round off to let either competitive fighters or newer people get more practice, but somehow, it kept ending up with someone else taking a round off, so I ended up participating in all of them. I'm fine with that.

Thursday

Muay Thai class

This was a good, hard padwork class. It didn't even let up much after someone who arrived late joined up to turn my duo into a trio, since both of the others were also serious about working hard. As an aside, it also seemed like I was getting more knockback on my front kicks than the other two were. I don't trust that entirely (it's possible that whoever was wearing the pads was just more willing to play along with me, due to size disparities), but at least it suggests that I'm getting some kind of reasonable performance from those kicks.
