Workout Recap - Week of September 17, 2023

Well, I had been anticipating getting back into sparring, but that didn't happen this week. I was feeling overwhelmed and checked out mentally due to some other stuff, so I just wasn't up to it. That's probably a weak reason to skip, since there's no guarantee that I'd be having a sharp day if I ever had to use my skills for real, but I don't care.

Monday

Muay Thai class

This class was a stamina grind, though whether that was the intent or it was simply that I had no stamina on this day is unclear to me. The kru got on me some early on for lacking power in my strikes, but she did give me some praise later on for maintaining good form despite my fatigue, so I'm taking my performance mostly as a wash. All in all, I'm fine with chalking this up to being an odd off day, as long as it doesn't become a trend.

Tuesday

Muay Thai class

We had a pure leg day, with the focus on high volumes of single power shots. We opened up with a hundred round kicks with each leg, and I had only one stumble when using my left, which feels better than I'm used to doing. I did have a few slips while doing straight knees into a kick shield, but I think those were honestly because my partner was complying too much with them; when I changed to doing spear knees, those felt solid. Overall, it was kind of an easy day for me. The drills were tiring while I was doing them, but I seemed to recover faster than usual in between them, and while I was definitely sweating, I didn't seem to have any lingering soreness or fatigue by the time I got home, when I usually need a shower and a couple liters of water to feel refreshed.

Wednesday

Muay Thai class

There was a big influx of newbies for this class, so we kept things very fundamental. My stamina felt good again, so I'm taking the trend of this class and the previous as potential evidence that whatever was wrong with me on Monday was an isolated incident. In any case, I feel like I'm getting relatively good at my low kicks; my partners were getting shifted by them despite being significantly heavier than I am, and my right kicks in particular were sounding like gunshots cracking off of the pad.

Thursday

Muay Thai class

This class focused on knee strikes, so theoretical readers should know I was into it. We did a lot of repetition on simple punching entries and then built up extensions from there. I had a new partner today, too, and as usual, it felt nice to surprise them with how much impact I could generate despite my small size. It was a fun class, which was much appreciated in contrast to some personal annoyances elsewhere.
