Workout Recap - Week of September 22, 2024
Back to the regular grind.
Monday
Muay Thai class
I was partnered up with the same poor-learner newbie from last week. There was no appreciable change in the behavior, so I'm done trying with them. This was pretty much a waste of a class for me, even while trying to do what I could to salvage their padholding.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
This was finally a head-to-head defense drill day. Incidentally, I didn't intentionally try to avoid partnering with the unmotivated newbie from the previous day, but it did turn out that I was with another partner already each of the times they asked about going with me, which was a happy coincidence. I got to work with a couple of other newbies who actually were engaged in learning, which was a refreshing experience to confirm that I wasn't just being an ornery veteran. I also got to work with a few of the competitive fighters, which was a nice rust check, and I think I was still just about as sharp as ever, for better or worse. The kru mentioned she'd be doing more of this sort of thing as an extra session in parallel with her boxing classes, so I think it'd be a good idea for me to try double-classing some days if I have the availability, especially if it seems like I won't be attending sparring in a given week.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
This was a progressive drill day, starting out with single strikes and building up to a five-part sequence. One of my ankles was feeling a little janky this day, so it took a couple of rounds for me to get loosened up and into a flow, but I felt like I handled myself well once I got over that. It helped that I was working with someone who was comfortable mixing in defensive checks, which is always enjoyable. It was a fun class, the second in a row.
Thursday
Muay Thai class
We worked on various punch-to-kick flows for this class. I was in a trio with a different newbie, but this time it was someone who was clearly trying and wanted to do as well as they could, so I once again enjoyed it, in contrast to Monday. Amusingly enough, I was finishing up a rep in one drill in a moment where the rest of the gym was suddenly quiet for whatever reasons, so I got to hear some satisfying cracks of leather that are usually drowned out by the general din. Once again, it was a fun class. I'm glad that I'm still able to find my pleasure amidst training to kill.
