Workout Recap - Week of September 8, 2024
Being just a couple of weeks out from the gym's next big event meant we were in the window of time when I typically skip sparring so that the competitive fighters don't have to waste any rounds with me when they should be putting on the finishing touches for their preparation. I'm probably overthinking things in doing that, especially since I've probably been training longer at this point than most people who're getting ready for their debut fights, but I'm willing to play along with the hierarchy when it's a fairly harmless thing like that.
Monday
Muay Thai class
This class was a mix of fundamentals review and stamina testing. Granted, it was even more of a stamina test for me than it should've been because my partner wanted to just stay rooted and keep repeating what we were doing without any movement or defense checks for hidden recovery time. That was fine, though, as I managed to keep up, including through the calisthenics finisher. As I've said before, my stamina is a weapon.
Tuesday
Muay Thai class
This was a straight-up stamina-burner class. I think I kept up well through the first half or so, but I did feel myself flagging towards the end. Still, I'll take it as a decent performance that demonstrated progress while still showing room for improvement, even without trying to guess at whether I was still nursing any lingering fatigue.
Wednesday
Muay Thai class
We opened with some low kick practice before shifting over to boxing work, for a curious mix of limb exclusivity in this class's focus. I was in a trio with one experienced person and one newbie, so I got a nice mix of experienced within each drill. Partway through the class, the kru called out that she appreciated how people at this gym have no ego about who they'll train with, which I would definitely agree is a strong point of the culture here. I think that's especially beneficial for someone like me, who isn't going to have much if any say in who I'm fighting against if I'm ever in a fight, so working with people of all sizes and skill levels is just good preparation.
Thursday
Muay Thai class
This class kept up the week's trend of having a focus on stamina, and I once again feel like I held up well, aside from wearing down a little in the literal final round. On the other hand, I'll take that in return for having been double-kicking with satisfying ferocity, including making my partner visibly regret saying that I could go harder on the initial low kick of the pairs. Overall, I think it was a good performance, especially coming after having felt very uncoordinated this day during warm-ups.
